ENGLISH 9: ELO Checklist

ENGLISH 9
ESSENTIAL LEARNING OUTCOMES (ELOs)

WHAT ARE ELOs?

ELOs are clearly-defined essential, core skills that a student needs to develop before they can move on to the next grade.  ELOs  for English 9 are based on the Ministry of Education’s curriculum for English 9.   In this course, there are 8 ELOs (see over).

WHY DO WE USE THIS EVALUATION METHOD?

The Ministry of Education requires that all student assessment be criterion-referenced.  This method of evaluation ensures that all students who pass the course have met a required minimum standard of competency in all areas of the course.  Mastering the ELOs for English 9 fully prepares students for success in future English courses and beyond.  This will prevent students from moving forward through the education system with gaps in their skills and learning.

HOW WILL I BE EVALUATED?

In English 9, you must demonstrate a required minimum competency for EACH of the 8 ELOs in order to pass the course.  You must demonstrate competency (pass assignments or tests) a certain number of times to be considered to have mastered a particular ELO.   You will get multiple opportunities to demonstrate competency – more than will be needed to pass the course.  Your grade will be calculated using your best scores for each ELO.

If a student has not demonstrated competency for any one of the ELOs, the course will be considered incomplete, and the student will receive an “I” (Incomplete) for English 9.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS OPPORTUNITIES OR FAIL TO PASS AN ELO?

You will have multiple opportunities to pass your ELOs, but if you miss these opportunities or do not meet the minimum standard for the assignments, you may find you have run out of opportunities.  If this is the case, make-up assignments will be completed outside of class time.  Make-up opportunities for no more than two ELOs will be given during the exam week at the end of the semester.

Hand in all your assignments on time!  Late assignments without a valid excuse (and a note from a parent or guardian) will not be accepted and will result in missing an opportunity to pass an ELO.

The same goes for extended vacations/absences outside of the school calendar.  These may result in you missing an ELO opportunity that you will not be able to make up and could impact your grade and ability to pass the course!
